"Ruby Chase" (追逐红宝石)

People often misunderstand the art of funambulism. Trust me, it’s quite simple and much less daring than crossing Nanjing Lu (南京路) on a busy shopping Saturday morning! Tightrope walking is about focus and concentration more than anything. The mind and body must become one; yes, as cliche as it sounds! The mind must be sharpened like a blade. Focus becomes your trusted ally as you block out the distractions of the world below and concentrate solely on the path ahead. One foot in front of the other is all it takes. Don’t look down, you’re not going there. Don’t glance behind, you’re also not heading that way. Your gaze directs your body’s movement. When you reach the other side, you’ll understand why tightrope walkers are philosophers of the highest order. French highwire artist Philippe Petit, in his book “To Reach the Clouds”, famously stated, “The essential thing is to etch movements in the sky, movements so still they leave no trace. The essential thing is simplicity. / That is why the long path to perfection is horizontal.” Whatever you’re chasing, once you take the first step you’ll realize, it’s all surprisingly simple.
