"30 Degrees"
In 1979 China opened her door to the world, ending an extended period of political, economic and cultural isolation. China’s subsequent rapid modernization and development has astonished us all.
The past three decades has seen a blossoming of Chinese contemporary art. Chinese artists, often inspired by their peers abroad, have launched into new arenas of visual communication to explore, exalt and critique, the contradictions and challenges of their contemporary existence.
30 Degrees presents thirty fresh and diverse artists working in a variety of mediums including oil on canvas, ink on paper, electronic media, video, photography, conceptual installation, performance and sculpture.
In addition, every Friday evening during the duration of 30 Degrees, island6 will host various events, including short film screenings, dance performances by Wu Yandan, Li Lingxi, musical happenings by Tom Lee Pettersen, Manels Favre and Zheng Yuyue; as well as discussion panels on contemporary art and the China context by local and foreign lecturers.
30 Degrees is a celebration of the energy, excitement, creativity and thoughtful introspection of China’s new generation artists inspired by an environment of accelerated flux.
The production of 30 Degrees is a dynamic collaboration between two of Shanghai’s leading independent contemporary art galleries: island6 & Studio Rouge
