"Bed Machine" 机床is a shadow activated counting device created by the collective Liu Dao 六岛 (art direction: Rose Tang 罗丝唐). As the viewer walks by an antique Chinese bed frame, his shadow made of LED digits starts counting in relation to his spatial position. The closer he gets, the faster it counts. Rose Tang’s approach to technology is one made upon her reflection towards the great change in Chinese culture during the last decade. Tang shows a tension between the traditional living conditions and the most advanced technology of which China is the cradle. With this work made out of wood and LEDs - the old and the new hightech - she displays the traditional family values and the newly constituted relationships holding it together, revealing the very personal struggle she encountered while developing her own identity.
