"Summer Night" is an ambiguous work with an allegorical suggestion towards the passage of time in a romantic portrayal by the performance artist, Li Lingxi. What is seen is a young woman whom falls to roll on the ground, a ground of pages of newsprint and paper collage. Her right arm is bent and raised forward from the elbow, the sequence dynamic and avoiding immediate references of any kind. The title delivers the initial subtle indication of a narrative which is not directly recognizable in the multi-media work. On close examination, we see a few photographic images obscured in the ink and collage print upon the newssheets, women at toil and shown in the usual press media of old in traditional ways. The artist within the video sequence seems to celebrate her environment, which seems as much as a revolt of joy than more blatant gesture which might otherwise the work to the failing of directly contrast on the metaphorical plane. What lies in store in the Summer Night? What is the innate promise felt by the young woman whose presence fills the visual field of the creation? Ambiguous, the reference is poetical, rather than polemical. The figure falling to the newsprint covered foreground might be in the brace of ecstasy, be romantically smitten or delirious out of a simple joy of the moment. And, after that moment passes? What shall come? This work demonstrates an unusual direction for the Liu Dao collective, where incognitive movements and visual compositions have come alive with electronic in a startling manner is not unprecedented, yet "Summer Night" offes a moment which intuits the future…and the impossibility to celebrate other than the now for all the beauty of promise.
