Capturing the performance by Li Lingxi 李翎溪, "Between" is a creation by Liu Dao which explores sexual desire at its impact. The visual field reveals the artist whom creates slight and seduction movements, the sole visual evidence of her body being her legs, clad in symbolically associative high heels and a mini-skirt. Her movements are supple and scarcely dressed body concealed from sight, her legs alone record her entire movement. The focal range on her extremities and the latent sexuality of the creation call into question what lies between: literally, her legs, and in addition, sexually stimulating imagery, our attraction or interest, the manner we associate or are psychologically limited to interpretations of the body as sexual instrument and visual artifice and concealment. The LED series continues in a cycle animated in a monochrome red, the dancers gestures relayed on two independent fields barely discernible from one another. Her skirt lifts and falls with a near mathematic precision, seductive or ridiculous with the repetition of an otherwise “innocent” play of the body. The electronic impulse is a synthesis of the automaton of the actual body stimulation upon our senses. Between compounds lurid voyeurism, sexual connotations to imagery and negates facile paradigms of body representation, interpretation. [Rajath Suri] |
