ABOUT

This provocative installation depicts Li Lingxi 李翎溪 rising in bloom and wilting in descent with the animation cycle. The field of colour is rich and enhanced within the natural teak frame, her movements suggesting a description of a woman as a metaphorical flower, experiencing the states of first blossoming to the final end of decay and eventual dissipation. The choreography is emotive and evocative, lyrical in effect. The performance artist simulates the organic growth and cyclic generation of natural life: what is given life from the soil eventually returns to it. The “life cycle” of the artist is extremely short, a few seconds, and where she falls into virtual obscurity is the point where she again returns. A bi-panel display mirrors the gesture and allows for a speculative position for the observer. Vertical illustration meets with an extended plane which makes the experience visually oppositional. The horizontal latitude gives a sense of multiplicity and generative cycles, the vertical of the time bound life which breathes silently and dissipates as near as it has appeared. Ephemerality, impermanence and a natural aesthetic earmark this work. Li Lingxi’s subtle evocations are captured in entire coherency of context, with formal aspects and conceptual strength enhanced with the Liu Dao collective spirit of innovation. [Rajath Suri]
