An ethical society or community includes a judgment on acceptable behavior in a feeble attempt to contain the intrinsic and unmappable forces of sex and punishment. Nothing brings as much force to authority, no promise delivers such resonance as these. We use them to control others and to reward or punish our own selves. But can we ever reach the salvation we think we deserve through pain, or do we only offer ourselves to be taken advantage of and nothing more?
"Physical Proof Against Pain, Meaning, Reject, Paradise" displays two blurry figures engaging in an eternal act of a spanking, an action which the authority figure is endlessly doling out under the pretext of a punishment.
Can increasing pain bring increasing relief? Can pain take you above the circle of action, reaction and consequence, extract you from past, present and future, from guilt, sorrow and consequence, as promised? Comes the voice of Authority: “Enough pain can bring salvation, therefore there is no such thing as punishment.” [Pete Bradt] |
