BLURB

There is a seasonal ambiguity to "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai" 梁山伯和祝英台, a snow-white piece with a white marble frame, and a white paper cut laid out over two LED panels, white as a blizzard but bright as a heat wave. Two LED butterflies fly within the frame, defiant of the temperature. Perhaps they exist only as apparitions for those suffering from the intensity of the climate. After all, art is just handcrafted hallucination. Bamboo stalks crossing over one another in the fashion of traditional Chinese artistic imagery, well, no one promises they’re even there.
In China’s new metropolitan areas, it’s hard to believe nature ever thrived, but under the cemented streets the Earth still hums, and it is the warm dirt of the planet that cushions the subways and waterworks running beneath our feet. As in "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai" 梁山伯和祝英台, urbanism has not conquered nature, only joined it. LED animation represents animal life in glowing, flapping colorful butterflies. The shapes are inverted so that holes in the paper cut illustrate the sections of the bamboo stalks widening gently as they connect. It is the lack of paper –not the presence of it– that indicates wood and trees. [Pete Bradt]
