A graduate of Chinese People’s Liberation Army Art College, Li Lingxi has felt the rush of standing among 20,000 military dancers in formation, cartwheeling beneath arches of banners streaming overhead, and twirling to the beat of a hundred drummers while watched by a nation.
Li’s dancing in "May 1st - Representation of Working Class" combines marches she learned in the 2nd Artillery Corps Troupe of Chinese PLA with modern styles she developed after moving to Shanghai and working with the Jin Xing Modern Dance Company. Li’s inspiring physical energy has been featured in Liu Dao artworks through 2008 and 2010, bringing the elegance and passion that she attributes to residents of Harbin, “the Ice City”, her hometown. In this particular piece, the dance is an ode to the progression of China, driven by the fuel of national spirit. [Pete Bradt] |
