Kodak was possibly the first camera and film manufacturer to realize the potential of promoting photography to a mass market. The Retina I was one of their first amateur cameras produced in the 1930s, which Xiao Fang’s proud parents had bought to take snapshots of
their pretty little girl. Would they have bothered if they’d known this
chubby-cheeked darling would grow up to elope, 3 months pregnant, with a Macau
taipan? Would they have felt vindicated when her husband dumped her 5 years
later? Would they have taken one more photo if they’d foreseen her tragic
drowning a month after? But we jump ahead of ourselves. At this moment, on a
sticky August evening in 1939, these questions do not exist. There is only a
little girl, a wonderful new toy, and an innocent joy captured for all
eternity. [Loo Ching Ling 吕晶琳] |
