Chihuahuas have famously short attention spans. And unsurprisingly, so do modern humans. In the “Chico Chica Chico”, Liu Dao explores the fragmented, disjointed nature of our 21st century lives. The insta-gratification world of supersonic-speed technology has not done wonders for our patience and focus. We see this perfectly in the narrow steel panels of a tower, where an eager, trotting little dog follows on the heels of his leggy, striding mistress. They flit across the cold metal pane in electronic waves. The bright eyes of the tiny excited chihuahua dart from side to side; his button nose sniffs and crinkles; his stubby tail wiggles and waves. So many things to pee on, so little time. His mistress is equally pre-occupied, pacing back and forth repeatedly. What is she searching for? What is he looking for? The answers elude our reaching grasp. All we can see are the chihuahua’s soulful eyes looking straight at ours, as if beseeching us to explain to him the meaning of his existence. [Exir Kamalabadi] |
