ABOUT

"Red Bean Lollipop" is the second of two island6 artworks making visual commentary on the theme of ideological seduction. Like "Big Sister", which combines spooky Panoptic symbolism with an animated portrait of alluring, female eyes, "Red Bean Lollipop" makes a striking combination of propagandist and erotic imagery. A humorous distortion of the common image of young women in PLA uniform swept with euphoria for serving their country in Chinese xuanchuan 宣传 posters, "Red Bean Lollipop" shows model Yeung Sin Ching 杨倩菁 in the much-seen PLA getup while lathering a lollipop with her tongue. Just as art was once transformed within China to transmit messages from the top down, island6 gives the progression another twist to share frivolous Pop styles of the Now with a generation ready to appreciate them in new ways.
