"Smoke And Mirrors" (烟与镜)
"Smoke And Mirrors" by island6 Art Collective (Liu Dao)
// BLURB //
At the back of the famed Paramount Dance Hall she leans against the wall, her cigarette primed and perched at the end of its holder, her slim frame hugged by imported furs in the European Art Deco style; a short hemline paired with a set of feather earrings: a call for modernity, for glamour, and for consumption.
It’s Saturday in 1930’s Shanghai, and the night has just begun.
The trumpet in The Jimmy King Jazz Band shouts the call to arms, high and brassy, luring eager club-goers out from the velvety shadows and onto the dance floor. She is no exception. A jaunty melody soon accompanies the rest of the song, dancing along the white and black keys of the piano while her footsteps follow suit. Light rebounds from the sequins of her shawl, the glossy rouge of her lipstick, glimmering, and everything is perfect.
