nunu (Wu Yan Dan), born 1982 in Wuxi, China, is an independent choreographer and dancer, living in Shanghai.
In 1995 nunu attended the Beijing Dance Academy to study various folk dance styles from China
and continued at the University level for 4 years in a special class instructed by Yang Mei Qi in
Guangdong to major in Contemporary Dance Choreography and Performance. Upon graduating, she relocated to Shanghai where she founded the Zuhe Niao collective with several independent artists. Together they created a physical theater
piece called, Tongue’s Memory of Home which has been presented on many european stages, receiving a foundation grant and the festival prize at ZKB in Zurich in 2006.
Her new project brand nu Dance premiered her first piece Question “mama” in 2007 at the Beijing CCD Workstation’s Festival of Young Generation Choreography and developed it through performances at Chinese festivals and recently at the
Congress on Research in Dance in the USA. Last year she was chosen for the
DanceWeb program of the Vienna Impulstanz Festival, the first from the PRC and
the first independent choreographer to obtain funding from the Shanghai Cultural
Development Foundation.
Her second piece 1 Night 5 Star Hotel premiered 2008 at the Shanghai MAMALA Theater Festival featuring 5 dancers.
In 2009 she performed Question “mama” in several european cities with the China Moves Project.
nunu devotes her entire energy to the creation of contemporary dance and to exploring and researching dance psychology, a life-long independent professional artist testing her art beyond national borders.
Along with Tom Lee Pettersen, they form the main pillar of the collective Liu Dao.
