island6 Arts Center is a production site for cutting-edge new media artwork with an adjoining gallery space for thematic, collaborative exhibitions. Three artistic branches operate in synergy within island6 to produce a wide variety of art ranging from visual, to interactive, to conceptual, to humorous, to somber - but always striking, always involving innovative takes on modern technology, and always the product of collaboration. The three branches of island6 Arts Center are the artists, the curators and the technicical team.
Artists
Six Chinese artists specialized in unique endeavors, from photography to taxidermy, investigating original uses of technology in art through dialogue and collaboration.
• Rose Tang is a zoologist and an architect, a self-taught photographer and stage designer. Rose is proficient in Photoshop, and works fervently in sculpture, video art, and LED animation. (+)
• Cai Duobao, is a taxidermist, sculptor and conceptual artist from the Guangzhou University School of Arts and Design, Faculty of Fine Art. (+)
• Wang Dongma is a video editor and multimedia artist from Beijing who has been with the collective since starting as a resident artist in December 2007. (+)
• Zhang Deli is a new media Chinese artist from Zhengzhou. With a background in fine arts studies, Deli assist Rose Tang in using different electronic tools to modify a collection of old negatives by applying 3D techniques. (+)
• Bing Bing is a photographer and writer from Guiyang. He studied Art and Design at Guanzhou University before working with the All China Federation of Trade Union. After assisting several professional photographers he developed his own aesthetic toward undergarments and lingerie. (+)
• Kong Mosha is a lacquer artist from Shanxi Province who studied painting at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and Kyoto University of Art in Japan. She has won numerous awards throughout China and combines a variety of mediums such as Kanshitsu and Chinese shells. (+)
Curators and Art Directors
An international team of experienced directors, curators and writers evaluating contemporary art and technology to bring cultural, historical and technological concepts into Liu Dao artworks and island6 exhibitions.
• Thomas Charvériat is founder and director of island6 Arts Center and Liu Dao. He is an artist and curator from Paris with fine arts degrees from the School of Visual Arts and Columbia University in New York and Audiovisual Institute (Pompeu Fabra University) in Barcelona. (+)
• Zane Mellupe is assistant director and cofounder of Liu Dao. She is an artist, curator and sinologist from Latvia with a background in Theatre Direction, Chinese Literature and Photography. She is the founder of an innovative artist’s residency program in Shanghai. (+)
• Antonio Argueta is creative director of island6. He studied art in Guatemala before helping Alexander Mittelmann to open Coldcreation Contemporary Art Gallery in Barcelona and pursuing electronic art as a key art director at MONTCADA5 with his background in 3D animation, composition and motion capturing for video and design. • Pete Bradt is a conceptual director and writer for Liu Dao. With a degree in Film Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, he formulates exhibition themes as part-time assistant curator. (+)
• Matt Carols is a curator and conceptual artist who works in painting, ceramics, Graphic Design, digital graphics and photography. His famous anti-French works have been exhibited regularly in New York City. (+)
Guest curators
Gallerists and curators from around the world showcasing island6 with exhibitions in their own galleries, global art fairs and external spaces from Europe to North America to Southeast Asia, and lending island6 guidance and support.
• Brian Wallace is the founder and director of Red Gate Gallery in Beijing, the first contemporary art gallery on mainland China. He has curated a Liu Dao solo show at Beijing and taken the artists to HK Art Fair. (+)
• Tally Beck is the founder of Tally Beck Contemporary, a Bangkok-based art organization specializing in Asian art. He has curated a show of island6 artwork in Thailand and an island6 solo show in his gallery space in Manhattan. (+)
• George Michell is the founder of Studio Rouge, an acclaimed gallery with spaces on the Bund and in Moganshan Lu of Shanghai. He has curated shows with Liu Dao in Studio Rouge and curated exhibitions taking place at island6. (+)
• Jonathan Thomson is an independent artist, critic, and curator who has included Liu Dao in shows he curated with Louis Vuitton Asia Pacific. As an art historian, he has selected Liu Dao artworks for shows in Taipei and Macau at Louis Vuitton cultural spaces. (+)
Technical Team
A fulltime onsite unit to handle all technical obstacles, from electrical engineering to computer programming, with lifelong experience in architecture, construction, welding, and engineering.
• Thomas Charvériat is technical director for island6 and Liu Dao. He is an experienced programmer and a licensed welder, with extensive knowledge of electrical engineering and a variety of techniques that guide the artists in the studio. (+)
• Mark Zhang is assistant director and production supervisor for Liu Dao. A graduate of Shanghai Teachers University with a degree in finance, he is island6’s CFO and Liu Dao’s manager. (+)
• Xu Shifu (“Master” in Chinese) is the Head Engineer and Primary Technician of island6 Arts Center. He is a licensed electrical engineer from Jiangsu, and his delicate work and extensive knowledge are vital to the making of all Liu Dao productions. (+)
• Yan Shifu (“Master” in Chinese) is the Head Ébéniste and Primary Technician of island6 Arts Center. His intense artistic vision springs from his home spirit of Jiangsu to produce the metal and wooden designs that frame the majority of Liu Dao’s installations. (+)
