As part of Red Gate Gallery's 20th Anniversary celebration, "20 Years - Two Generations of Artists at Red Gate"will open in Shanghai at island6 Arts Center on September 9, 2011 (with a preview on September 6).
Since opening its doors at the Dongbianmen Ming Dynasty Watchtower in 1991, Red Gate has been recognized as a pioneer, deeply engaged in the promotion of the Chinese contemporary art. Over the two decades, Red Gate has exhibited the best of contemporary Chinese art and is proud to witness the maturation of Red Gate artists, many of whom have been exhibiting with the gallery for almost two decades. In May 2011, island6’s in-house collective Liu Dao was invited by Red Gate Gallery of Beijing to attend the Hong Kong Art Fair. In the Fair’s fourth and largest year since its inception, over 150 galleries from around the world attended, bringing the most extraordinary contemporary art available and making the HK Art Fair one of the most popular and acclaimed events in the world. island6 Arts Center is taking part in the 3rd annual JUE Festival with the staging of the 34th exhibition on its premises, "Omen". On the occasion of the festival, the cutting-edge art collective Liu Dao has conjured up an electric collection of eerily arresting multimedia artworks that wrench the senses into an obsession over the shadowy world of the unseen future. "Omen" is the sobering antidote pointing to the sureness of trouble ahead, sure as the trouble behind. "Omen" lurks in themes of paranoia, mania, and apocalyptic feeling. "Plugged In" is the first ever solo exhibition for the artists of island6 to be held in North America. Under the curation of Tally Beck, island6 portrays Shanghai in her post-World Expo state, shimmering and morphing before your eyes in fourteen unique artworks. Hypnotic LED animations circle within the narratives of papercut imagery and sleek stainless steel frames to depict Shanghai’s smallest visual details, booming infrastructure and everlasting exoticism. "Prophecies" is an exhibition considering the human ability to perceive, evaluate and craft the future. The art is made on the foundation of the assumption that we are all prophets of varying degrees and individual mindsets, able to distinguish events ahead of us from personal angles and to certain depths. These events range from the daily and mundane to those occurring far after our lifetime, as monumental as the fall of an empire, or the coming of a messiah.
The art collective Liu Dao is drawn to these concepts as their works question the qualities of linear time through time-lapse video and narrative LED work. The interactive productions also highlight an individual's constant influence on the surrounding world. (read more >>>)

The Art Collective Liu Dao 六岛

In "Electric Shanghai", Liu Dao’s first exhibition in South East Asia, the digital art collective examines a young city intoxicated by potent dreams of transformation. The artwork of Shanghai-based Liu Dao charts the pulse of change in China as the nation and peoples swing between lurid modernization and mesmerizing orientalism. With American curator Tally Beck, island6 Arts Center brings Liu Dao to Bangkok, Thailand. Bursts of electric LED lights flash across panels, behind Chinese rice paper, and among papercuts of folk symbols, in animations that dazzle one moment and vanish the next. Set against the enormity of China’s ancient civilization, the hyperactivity of contemporary Shanghai's development is displayed as a visceral, magical, voyeuristic dream. (read more >>>)

Rose Tang understands that the unknown facets of a subject's life are as necessary to a portrait as shading and perspective. Shadowed pasts are not illuminated but, through her black and white images of gritty interiors and decaying emotional landscapes or passing family histories, simply referred to with compassionately given space. As Rose Tang's body of work continues to grow, the shadows appearing in each frame begin to join through a collective culture that exists both in the artworks and outside in real-world China to portray the author, subject and country in their overall complexity. "The Big Bang" is the third exhibition of White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney, Australia, one of the world's largest and most acclaimed collections of Chinese contemporary art. The show features highlighted works from Judith Neilson's White Rabbit Collection including a selection of Liu Dao productions. Like all the artwork in the White Rabbit Collection, the pieces involved were chosen as vehicles to celebrate the excellence of Chinese contemporary art. (read more >>>)

Liu Dao’s first ever solo exhibition, "Garden of Autumn Vapours", is shown in Red Gate Gallery during August, 2010, bringing in the lìqiū立秋, the beginning of autumn in the Chinese calendar.
Nature’s cosmic breath of life is no better understood nor appreciated than by the Chinese scholar, lost in a bamboo grove, for the garden is a natural landscape for some, and a sanctuary of social contemplation for others. The garden is a skeletal world of Taizu stone, providing strength for the weary and offering courage to the weak. From its playful peonies, and lavish plums, lessons have been learned in the art of leisure, truly, the Mother of all philosophies.
Like the Chinese garden, the works in this exhibition were born first from the tender branches of innocence, peace and tranquility.
With LEDs, the network of electronic life inside each frame is homage to China’s cultural interconnectivity, and a replica of roots, veins and neurons found in nature. Liu Dao presents the nation's miraculous developments in the forms of blinking, majestic butterflies, brightly shining goldfish swaying ponderously along bonsai trees, and glinting sparrows darting across the sun. "Police and Her" draws together fourteen artists whom have sought to address questions of gender and authority with an intelligently provocative collective response, a thematically sound exhibition offering varying interpretations by each individual given independent locations in the actual site of the gallery space.
A delicate issue which pertains to a reality often indiscernible to the casual eye, the inter-relationship between women and policing authorities in the PRC, is depicted in an astringent manner. Frontal portrayals of the female form alongside/engaged with/subjected to/in oppositional contrast with immediately identifiable police reveals the complexity of what exists, in truth, due to an interdependency whose origin is socio-economic while simultaneously the fruit of oppression and gender discrimination. Arthur Eddinton once said "The universe is not only stranger than we imagine, it's stranger than we can imagine". According to Tibetan esotericists, all existence is nothing but a series of alternating transitional states. Waking, sleeping, meditating, dying, wandering in the spirit world. "To Get Rich is Glorious" reflects the colour, creativity and vibrance of Shanghai and New China. It is the first of a series of exhibitions showcasing outstanding art from Studio Rouge artists who work in a variety of media, including live performance video work, glass art, painting and digital art. The artists include Tao Hongjing, Zhao Bo, Zhang Kai, Chen Hangfeng, Greg Girard, Lu Chi, Zhang Liyu, Liu Dao 六岛, Mao Yu, Christophe Demaître and Xu Zhifeng. The artwork is displayed with a sense of admiration for the oft-quoted Deng Xiaoping phrase that often sums up the Chinese economic miracle and the people living modern China within. (read more >>>)

In the same way the earliest forms of eyes were born in the Cambrian Explosion half a billion years ago as only simple proteins that could sense light, our sense of time might be utterly primitive to what is to come. Those moments of déjà vu where two distinct places -the past and the present- merge could be the first speckles of a new mental capability in development that will allow us to experience the past, present and future in ways currently incomprehensible. The art of Liu Dao is especially relevant to these themes because of the group’s use of time lapse video, narrative LED work, motifs of change, odes to the eternal, and always-evolving quest for contemporary artistic approaches. Absolute Zero features the artists of island6 Arts Center as they battle with the nature of time’s mysteries and consider the musings and breakthroughs of time’s questioners from 5th Century St. Augustine to contemporary theoretical physicist Michio Kaku. "Fakirs" awakens themes related to psychology, parapsychology, philosophy and cognitive science in a context of artistic expression. It is an attempt to contrast the climate of Shanghai with that of antiquity, the origins of the Indo-Persian region whose traditions denote a culture at once mystical as well as metaphysical.
