Rob Smith (1976, UK) uses electronic and mechanical apparatus to make connections to the landscape in which he finds himself. It is a way of working that has used kites, water wheels and environmental sensors to create dynamic and constantly changing images of the landscape. These activities generate a shifting picture of a temporary and fragile environment and the artist’s activity in relation to it.
Smith studied at the Royal academy Schools in London and has shown widely in the UK, recent shows include The Invention of Solitude at The Nunnery London, Breathless at the RA Schools Gallery and Marriage as Menace at the Keith Talent Gallery, London.
He was drawn to Shanghai’s rapidly changing cultural and physical cityscape and is undertaking a months residency at Island6 and using it as a host venue for his WINDscale project. This has been made possible thanks to a grant from Arts Council England. |
