Whenever a porcelain vase is made, a journey of never-ending transfiguration starts. Like the bodies of sea-animals that transform into sand and stone over millions of years, a piece of pottery changes in owners, functions and even shape during the course of centuries.  Ever since the end of the Qing dynasty, collecting remaining pieces of old porcelain and forming them into jewelry has been a tradition. Unlike the Japanese Kintsugi masters who embrace the beauty of imperfection and emphasize the absence of lost parts by filling them with golden lacquer, it is quite the opposite here. The lost parts gain new meaning. Zodiac signs, fire, Yin and Yang, imperial symbols, dragons, birds and fishes of old porcelain can live on rings, bracelet and necklaces. But why not mix them all into one new vase? A cacophony of old contexts, an assemblage of century-old memories. Just paint it blue and give it a new start.
