What is nothing? The answer, of course, is nothing. From nothing, comes everything and from everything comes experience. Got it? Think of a wheel. It is circular, comprised of three main parts: the rim, the spokes leading to the center of the wheel, and the center itself, the hub. As we know, the hub is empty. It is precisely this emptiness that gives the wheel meaning as a wheel, just as it is the silence between notes that give music life and the space between earth that give rivers form. Kazimir Malevich’s Black Square is a good example of nothing-doing-something. As noted by the artist himself, “It is from zero, in zero, that the true movement of being begins.” The zero-perspective allows the opportunity for all possibilities to be realized. “Nothing” is a balancing force; an image must have the appropriate amount of negative space against the positive to be satisfying. How does nothing play in our own lives? Taking nothing seriously is as winding up a toy and allowing it go perfectly along its path.
