The scene might have taken place at the apartments of Gascogne or at some lower levels of the Picardie building. Rumor has it that it was the room where the Chinese version of André Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto was drafted. According to legend, a mysterious couple used to make shameless erotic acts there all night long, right in front of their window, surrounded by French Wuton trees. Some think it was a staged performance created by local artists to tease those who frequently stared at their window. With the light purposefully kept on immense crowds from around Shanghai gathered to enjoy the spectacle free of charge. Ladies from China City came by bicycles and gentlemen from the International Settlement arrived with their automobiles. The French police and their wives would come for a new taste of reality, too. As if by staring they could acquire the content of it. Anyway, isn’t that what art is all about?
