"Mid-Autumn Sketches" (中秋的草图)
"Mid-Autumn Sketches" by island6 Art Collective (Liu Dao)
// BLURB //
One of the reasons bird-and-flower paintings have been so popular in traditional Chinese art is the seemingly endless combination of symbolic meanings. The endless repetition of birds and flowers might seem kitsch for Western eyes accustomed to historical evolution from the Renaissance onwards. For the Chinese eye, however, sketches of bamboo, trees, flowers, vegetables, rocks, insects, birds, all kinds of animals and all kinds of flowers have gained symbolic meanings on such a rich and nuanced level, that their mere combination can create a language unto itself. But if stylistic flow creates a dynamic history in which the new is built upon the old, then perhaps the repetition is a silent rhythm that incorporates past and present on some unseen equal footing. Only future decades and centuries can tell us.
