"My Nearest and Dearest" (我最亲爱的)
"My Nearest and Dearest" by island6 Art Collective (Liu Dao)
// BLURB //
Potted plants and pets. Living in the city, these are the forms of nature we choose to surround ourselves with, small attempts to brighten the grey. The few animals that we include in our lives, we dote on. They become our nearest and dearest confidantes, our phone backgrounds, our baobeis. We smile even as we clean up the messes they leave behind. These animals have become esteemed members of society; some have higher ranking jobs than your average graduate. They serve in the police force, they act as security, they are service animals to the disabled. Who are these saints? Some also act as muses and models, who don’t charge a single penny. Frida Kahlo’s self portraits see her surrounded by an array of different animals. Her treasured monkeys, her birds, her dogs, are all painted around her in her portraits, forming a part of her presented identity. For Picasso, his dachshund, Lump, featured in over 45 of his artworks. An unspoken bond between an artist and their animal, made eternal in material form.
